Alaska

Security personnel working for a security company providing a security service to others must be licensed and are required to take a minimum number of hours of training and are required to have background checks performed.

According to AS 18.65.460 "An employer is not required to seek licensure for the employer's employees who provide unarmed plant security on that employer's premises." Thus, bar security personnel are not required to be licensed.

Arizona

Security personnel working for a security company providing a security service to others must be licensed and are required to take a minimum number of hours of training and are required to have background checks performed.

The DPS website states that you do not need to be licensed if you "work for a proprietary company as explained in Exceptions. A proprietary company pays you to be their security guard."

According to ARS 32-2606 "Exceptions" security guards do not need to be licensed if they are regulated by federal or homeland security standards and specifically paragraph 3; A company that employs security guards solely for use of and service to itself and not for others and that complies with the following requirements: subsection (c); The company must annually submit an affidavit to the department that attests to the company's compliance with its internal procedures that require a background investigation for each of its security guards.

So if a bar or nightclub submit their annual affidavit, they are in compliance.

California

Any person working in security must be licensed and must go through a criminal background check. However, there are two kinds of licenses. First there is a regular security officer license in which you perform guard duties through a private security company and are mandated to a minimum number of hours of training. The second license is the proprietary license in which you work specifically for one entity which requires no mandatory training. Bar security personnel would be required to obtain a proprietary license.

From the state website: A proprietary private security officer is defined generally as an unarmed individual, (1) who is employed exclusively by a single employer, (2) whose primary duty is to provide security services for that employer, (3) whose services are not contracted to any other entity or person, and (4) who meets both of the following criteria: He or she is required to wear a distinctive uniform clearly identifying the individual as a security officer, and He or she is likely to interact with the public while performing his or her duties.
